Lucas Smart

Lucas is Dinning Hunter’s current articling student.

Prior to entering law school at the University of Victoria in 2022, Lucas completed his Bachelor of Music with Honours at Humber College in Toronto, specializing in woodwind performance. After returning to Vancouver Island, he obtained his Bachelor of Education (Post-Baccalaureate) degree from Vancouver Island University and worked as a music teacher and teacher–on-call in the Cowichan Valley and Nanaimo for 4 years.

During law school, Lucas completed a Co-operative Education work term at Dinning Hunter. Lucas also completed a term at The Law Centre, where he assisted clients in various family law, residential tenancy, human rights, and Small Claims matters. After completing a second Co-op work term with another local firm, he obtained his Juris Doctor in 2025 and returned to Dinning Hunter to begin his articles.

Lucas brings a diverse background to the team at Dinning Hunter. In addition to his work in education and law, Lucas performed music in Toronto and on Vancouver Island for nearly 20 years. He also volunteered with several local hockey and lacrosse teams in Nanaimo, where he quickly established a reputation for his reliability and swift problem-solving. No matter the context, Lucas remains passionate about engaging in the community around him. He takes pride in combining this passion with his evolving legal knowledge and skillset to help the firm deliver quality results for their clients.

Outside of the office, Lucas enjoys exploring the Victoria area with his wife and their new baby, golfing, and playing music.
