Child Support Payments in BCDetermining the correct child support paymentThe amount of child support payable monthly depends on the number of children and the income of the parent who is paying the support. The Federal Support Guidelines (click here) specify the minimum amount of support that must be paid based on the paying parents income and the number of children. For example, the simplified table specifies that a support payer earning $60,000 annually will pay $907 monthly to support two children. Click here to see the simplified child support calculator (table) provided by the Federal Government of Canada. Extra expenses for child supportWhen it comes to “extraordinary expenses” – those above the general cost of raising a child, such as extracurricular activities – the amount each parent contributes is based on their relative incomes. Again, a higher earner will make a higher contribution. Consult a family lawyer to make sure these are accounted for in a child support settlement. How long the support lastsWhile child support payments can end at the age of 19, there are situations when it continues to be payable. The most common situation is when a child attends post-secondary education. These types of details are important to consider when planning financially for the future of both yourself, and your children.
