With the longer life expectancy and smaller families, wills and estates lawyer John Jordan has noticed there seems to be fewer children who dealing on their own with more difficulties encountered as a parent ages.

Not uncommonly, difficulties can quickly become a crisis without proper planning.

It is better to plan ahead than react to an emergency.

So, as much as he can, Jordan encourages the adult children of ageing parents – and the parents themselves – to plan for retirement, and for potential health challenges before they occur.

This planning should start well before retirement.

A 3-Ring Binder Can Be the Key To Preventing a Crisis

Jordan often advises his clients to store important documents in a 3-ring binder. This makes it easy to quickly address logistics if a health issue arises, especially if the adult children of reside in a different city, province or country than their parents.

Keeping the following documents handy in a binder:

  • Birth and marriage certificates
  • Military records
  • Funeral instructions
  • Income tax returns
  • Any legal documents such as powers of attorney, representation agreements and their will
  • Assemble all documents in a place that can be accessed by their children or their designated agent.

It’s all part of keeping records centralized, so the adult child will know where to go in the event something happens.
